Unlike 30 years ago, it has become more challenging to collect calls to the US from abroad. In the past, the telephony system was a monopoly in most countries. Nowadays, sometimes there exist multiple phone operators, and every operator has its way of calling the US. Moreover, most regulations in the past were for land-line only.
Do not expect easily to collect calls to the US in case of emergency. Therefore, prepare for an emergency plan before you leave the US. Moreover, in this pandemic time, be aware that the waiting time to call -- for example -- a customer service line will be about 30-60 minutes. Consider preparing for calling a toll-free number in the US. Make sure that all preparation is done before you leave abroad.
Install A Cell Phone App
Install an app like Skype. Skype is available on various platforms like Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, macOS, and iOS. You need a Microsoft account for using Skype. And it would be best if you had an email account and a reliable internet connection to set up your Microsoft Account as well as Skype.
